- ➤ A garage fire near Cantonment on Saturday just before 5 p.m. destroyed a local autobody shop, and the mechanic said he lost all his equipment and a family heirloom without anyone getting hurt. WEAR-TV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Birdon, an Australian marine engineering firm, will invest $275 million to build a 400,000 sqft shipyard at the port that will create 2,000 jobs, with a planned opening in the third quarter of next year. City officials are negotiating a $76 million grant to support the project. Pensacola News Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program announced a $750,000 EPA grant to launch a water quality monitoring network across local bays — the project will collect monthly data from about 30 sites over three years with help from regional partners. FOX 10
- ➤ A large wildfire burned over 200 acres near the junction of 3 Notch Rd & Simmons Rd in Santa Rosa County on Sunday morning. Fire units assisted the Florida Forest Service until the blaze was contained while investigators looked into its cause. FOX 10
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Escambia County is pushing a new state law to quickly remove derelict boats from Bayou Chico and other waterways (a move aimed at reducing cleanup costs and protecting the environment). Lawmakers will consider the bill during the first week of February. Pensacola News Journal

- ➤ In January, nine new restaurants opened across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties while five local favorites permanently closed. New openings include Prime and Beyond Wagyu Steakhouse and Bar-Celona Tapas Bar, offering diverse cuisines for diners (such as wagyu steak, Mediterranean fare, and Hawaiian barbecue).
