COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family Promise of Escambia County will host its inaugural bed racing event on March 29 at Fountain Park—teams of four will push a custom bed down Zaragoza Street in historic Seville Square to raise awareness for ending childhood homelessness.  Pensacola News Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Aldi has opened a new store in Pensacola in a space that was once a Winn-Dixie as part of its plan to change 220 locations by 2028. Shoppers will find that a quarter is needed to unlock carts—this system helps keep costs low and shopping swift.  Pensacola News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old Pensacola teen pleaded no contest to eight misdemeanor sexting charges in Juvenile Court on Thursday after sending AI-altered sexual images made by her ex-boyfriend and received eight months probation—she must finish school, avoid social media, complete 75 hours of community service, and write letters and essays to have the charges dismissed.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Donald Holmes II, 45, was sentenced to 12 years for manslaughter after shooting cab driver Steven Davis three times in a Pensacola Winn-Dixie parking lot on Aug. 26, 1998 (his sentence includes 352 days of credit and will run concurrently with a home invasion robbery conviction), leaving Davis fatally injured as he sought help.  WEAR-TV
  • After a one-day trial, a Pensacola jury acquitted Alexander Deloach of the second-degree murder of Napoleon Powell, who was fatally shot on Feb. 12 in Bellview on Moore Road—Deloach remains in jail on unrelated charges.  Pensacola News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pensacola area is under a moderate risk for severe weather this weekend, with storms on Saturday expected to bring winds up to 70 mph, quarter-sized hail, and possible tornadoes. The National Weather Service and AccuWeather warn that the threat could last into Sunday morning as the storm system moves east — residents should stay alert.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola is updating its redevelopment plan to include the Bay Center area and is working on an incentive package to help redevelop the closed Grand Hotel—damaged by Hurricane Sally in 2020. City officials will soon meet to review changes that include removing an Interstate 110 ramp and improving local streets for better bike and pedestrian access.  Pensacola News Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In February, Escambia County’s luxury home market performed strongly when an East Hill residence closed for $2.4 million (the highest sale), with homes on Tarpon Drive ($2.27 million), Lagniappe Drive (about $1.89 million), Chanticleer Court ($1.4 million), and Lakeside Drive (roughly $1.38 million) also reaching high prices.  Pensacola News Journal
