CRIME NEWS

  • A Cantonment man, 38-year-old Matthew Kyle Williams, was arrested this morning and charged with felony aggravated assault after deputies said he hit a woman with an AR-15 rifle and fired it several times at a home on Tate Road—he is held without bond at Escambia County Jail.  WEAR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pensacola State College held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 7 at 9 a.m. at Pensacola International Airport for its new 34000 square foot facility for the Aviation Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Program — PSC President Ed Meadows and board chair Gordon Flash Sprague thanked local partners including Gov. Ron DeSantis, Triumph Gulf Coast and ST Engineering for their support.  Local Pulse
  • UWF was recognized as a gold-level Military Friendly School and designated as a Military Spouse Friendly School for 2025 to 2026—an honor that shows its strong support for veterans and their families moving from military service to school and new careers.  University of West Florida

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 3, County Clerk Pam Childers halted discretionary fund requests—pending a review of church-sponsored events for constitutional compliance. Commissioners were told to clearly document each expense's public purpose—her report in May will guide future funding decisions.  Rick's Blog
  • Santa Rosa County commissioners on Monday approved spending $385,665 to fund the design of a new toll system and a rate study for the Navarre Beach Bridge—this action is expected to help generate revenue for necessary repairs and future bridge replacement plans.  WUWF
  • Three UWF board nominees—Gates Garcia, Paul Bailey and Chris Young—will face a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on higher education on Thursday at 10 a.m. Chairman Scott Yenor, who has drawn controversy, was voted in but is not scheduled for a hearing.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Between April 7 and 12, Pensacola-area high schools competed in spring sports—Niceville beat Gulf Breeze 20 to 0 in flag football, Pace won 27 to 6 in football and Pensacola shut out Atmore Christian 4 to 0—and several teams have future games scheduled this week.  Pensacola News Journal
