CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old man was charged on May 20 with attempted robbery with a firearm for his alleged role in a planned attack on a girl's boyfriend at Ashton Brosnaham Park on April 6—his next court date is Tuesday.  WEAR-TV
  • A 69-year-old Pensacola man (James Phillips Jr.) is charged with molesting two girls while babysitting in Santa Rosa County after a May 21 security camera recorded the incident, and he was arrested on May 23 in Escambia County and is now held without bond in Santa Rosa County Jail.  WEAR-TV
  • On May 11, a 44-year-old man was arrested at a Pensacola Walmart after he was seen eating blueberries and later found with 11 grams of fentanyl and other drugs—he is held on a $534,500 bond.  WEAR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The fifth annual Gulf Coast Culture Fest kicked off in downtown Pensacola on Saturday at Seville Square—showcasing live entertainment, food trucks, and local vendors as the event celebrated cultural diversity. Organizers said the free event highlighted the need to honor the many cultures in the community.  WEAR-TV
  • On Saturday afternoon, the Fiesta Boat Parade sailed past downtown Pensacola with people gathering at Plaza De Luna and Sanders Beach—part of a 10-day celebration honoring the Spanish Conquistador who founded the city in 1559. Bridgett Middleton, executive director of Fiesta Pensacola, said the event brought in millions to the local economy each year.  WEAR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pardoned TV star Todd Chrisley said his time at a federal prison in Pensacola changed his outlook when he saw that some African American inmates were not given the same programs (he noted uneven privileges in a minimum-security camp). He vowed to expose system injustices and work to improve the lives of those affected (comments made after his release on May 30).  WEAR-TV
