COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, local news reports a shortage of qualified childcare providers—an expansion at the NWFL Wawa has been announced and The Vine Wine Bar now has new owners.  Pensacola News Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wawa is expanding in the Pensacola area by planning seven more stores with three under development in Escambia and four proposed in Santa Rosa counties—updated plans for an East Milton store were filed in early June. Two stores in Northwest Pensacola are open, and local residents near East Milton have raised traffic concerns which officials say are addressed by removing one access driveway—aiming to keep most traffic on Highway 90.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Monsignor Luke Hunt of St. Ann Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze will retire on June 21 after serving in the diocese for 40 years.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola voters approved a new city charter in November 2009 that replaced the ceremonial mayor role with a strong mayor who serves as the city’s chief executive—this change came after heated debates and led to Ashton Hayward defeating former Mayor Mike Wiggins.  Rick's Blog
  • Escambia County postponed dissolving the Escambia-Pensacola Human Relations Commission until December 31 so staff can create a full-time role to manage fair housing complaints—officials plan to handle these issues in-house as supporters worry the move will reduce accountability.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Santa Rosa County fire chiefs asked county commissioners to raise the MSBU rate to buy more equipment and hire paid firefighters as demand and costs grow. The proposed rate increase—$37 per household and 1.5% for commercial—will be discussed today with a vote expected on Thursday.  WEAR-TV
