- ➤ On June 19, deputies shot and killed a 37-year-old suspect at an Arby's on U.S. Highway 98 after he allegedly fled into the restaurant, struggled with a deputy, and moved aggressively toward officers wielding a knife—no deputies were injured and all involved officers are now on administrative leave while a state investigation continues. - ➤ Commissioner Hofberger pulled the Pensacola Beach Gateway project from the county meeting agenda today after plans to spend $1.1M on a decorative arch for the beach drew strong public criticism — the decision ends a long review process that started in January and included several design changes. - ➤ Pensacola’s General 'Chappie' James Memorial near the Three Mile Bridge is at risk as the city said the foundation did not submit the required funding documents by June 30. - ➤ Advocacy groups urged a state oversight committee to probe directives that led school districts to remove dozens of books without proper review—accusing officials of bypassing legal procedures.
