COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Intermission purchased and delivered four industrial fans to the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare to help keep shelter animals cool during Pensacola's hot summer. WolfGang LLC and Pensacola Paw-di Gras organized a fundraiser that supported the donation and showed strong local backing for animal welfare.  Local Pulse
  • Dustin and Mandy Vaughn plan to install a sailfish from an old Pensacola Beach welcome sign as an art piece outside their store at 1591 Via De Luna Drive to celebrate local history and invite photo opportunities. The request will be presented to the SRIA Board at 5 p.m. Aug. 13—awaiting approval.  Pensacola News Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 2025 Pensacola Beach Air Show, headlined by the Blue Angels and held from July 9 to 12, generated over $31.5 million for Escambia County according to a study by Downs and St. Germain Research—nearly half of the 206500 visitors came from outside and spent over $20 million at local businesses.  Local Pulse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thousands of students and teachers in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties began the new school year on August 11th with mixed feelings of smiles and tears. At West Pensacola Elementary and Workman Middle School (where caring staff offered support) classroom routines resumed with activities (such as treats and greetings) that marked a hopeful start.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Students in 58 of Florida's 67 counties began school on August 11 while the remaining districts will start between August 12 and 14—new laws now ban classroom use of cell phones and other wireless devices, and a sales tax holiday on school supplies runs through August 31. This change helps families adjust to updated rules and schedules for the 2025-2026 school year.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Data from the Florida Department of Education shows that over 155,000 students were homeschooled in the 2023-24 school year — a 46% increase over the past five years.  WEAR-TV

  • On August 7, Florida DOGE issued a nine‐page audit demand to Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves after the city's property taxes jumped 70% with a flat population—officials must provide records on contracts, personnel pay, DEI programs, green goals, and more starting August 18.  Rick's Blog

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brent Lane from Cat Country 98.7 will host a Radiothon on August 15 to raise funds for Studer Family Children’s Hospital and support a new laser-guided treatment called LIT Therapy. He will share his NICU experience so local families can get help when they need it — his story shows how important community care is.  Local Pulse
  • Hyundai Hope on Wheels awarded a $100,000 Impact Grant to Studer Family Children’s Hospital to support its Bear Family Foundation Pediatric Oncology Center for Hope and improve care for children with cancer. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Pensacola Habitat for Humanity launched the Northwest Florida Community Land Trust to help families keep homes affordable by selling houses through a 99-year lease while keeping the land in trust + county commissioners met to discuss expanding the program to protect longtime residents from displacement, with Habitat’s president explaining that the model can lower a home’s cost from $220,000 to about $155,000.  WUWF
