  • Gulf Breeze Will Do, a women’s philanthropic group, has opened its 2025 grant cycle for local nonprofits, schools and community groups serving areas with zip codes 32561 and 32563; applications are accepted until September 8—grant recipients will be named in November.  Local Pulse

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fisherman was attacked by an 8-foot shark on Aug. 2 off Pensacola while spearfishing as his friends quickly made a tourniquet (using a t-shirt, speargun band, and fillet knife) and responders from Naval Air Station Pensacola and Escambia County Fire Rescue helped him.  Pensacola News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Alyssa Blackburn, a Pensacola woman, will be tried for first-degree premeditated murder for her alleged role in the 2020 shooting death of her boyfriend Jesse Geoghagan—prosecutors say she joined two accomplices armed with a firearm to check his home, with her trial beginning August 14th at 9 a.m.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Willie Slack, a 49-year-old Milton man, was indicted on Aug. 12 for possessing multiple firearms and ammunition in violation of the Armed Career Criminal Act due to his eight prior convictions—he faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years and will be arraigned today in Pensacola.  Pensacola News Journal
  • A 54-year-old Pensacola woman is charged with neglect after leaving her 80-year-old father in his recliner for nearly two months—resulting in severe injuries and hospital treatment—and she is held on a $10,000 bond with a court date set for Aug 22.  WEAR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin stayed a tropical storm with little change expected for the next 72 hours but could turn into a hurricane by Thursday and a major one by Sunday as it moves west-northwest—Florida residents should keep an eye on weather updates.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency will audit Pensacola on August 18-19 to find waste in government spending as part of Governor DeSantis’s plan, and three reasons—including the mayor’s support of a governor candidate, pushback over trustee picks, and a social media comment by Rep Salzman—have raised questions about why the small city is being targeted.  Rick's Blog
