COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents near the new Wawa on N. Davis Hwy are concerned about heavy traffic and noise from its large truck-access entrance on E. Johnson Ave and worry it may delay emergency vehicles. They will share their concerns at a public forum on Sept. 4 while county officials maintain the project meets zoning and safety requirements—Wawa's opening is planned for Sept. 18.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Blue Dot Barbecue will mark its 80th anniversary by offering limited-edition commemorative cups and special hamburger deals on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2. Owner Julian Byron Long is planning to expand the restaurant and add a new point-of-sale system—an upgrade that honors the legacy of one of Pensacola’s oldest Black businesses.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Where Ya Bin discount store reopened at its new location at 6235 N. Davis Highway Suite 101 on Aug.29; customers lined up early to shop high-end items that drop in price each day — deals include record players, espresso machines, and headphones. CRIME NEWS

  • Pensacola teen Sunshine James, now 17, is charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder after she allegedly shot her mother Alexis Pineda—injuring her—and fatally shot her mother's fiancé Christopher Moore in their Essex Pointe apartment on August 30th, 2023; her trial is set to begin with jury selection on September 15.  Pensacola News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Purple Heart recipients Chris Williams and Charlotte Crespo overcame battlefield injuries and now attend Pensacola State College as Williams runs his HVAC business and Crespo studies psychology to help veterans—both continue to face challenges like PTSD and other traumas. The college was named a Purple Heart College on Aug 7, which shows its commitment to supporting veterans.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a District 7 Town Hall on August 26 at Lakeview Activity Center, Mayor Reeves and Councilman Wiggins outlined major projects including a $9.5 million Fricker Center renovation, Sanders Beach upgrades, and a Baptist Hospital redevelopment set to close property late September with demolition starting year-end. Residents voiced concerns over a stalled Chappie James Memorial Plaza and gentrification while also discussing plans for stormwater projects and red light camera expansion—efforts aimed at easing traffic and safety issues.  Rick's Blog
