CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Pensacola spans 8 1/2 acres and includes 30 properties, 12 open to the public, where visitors explore local history through diverse architecture and artifacts—Historic House Tours run Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., featuring stops at Lavalle House and Old Christ Church.  Pensacola News Journal
  • The Gulf Coast Jazz Festival is wrapping up today in Pensacola—organizers fear it may end permanently after the Escambia Tourist Development Council rejected a $250,000 funding request in August. Supporters hope county commissioners will provide funds to secure the future of the smooth jazz event.  WEAR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Escambia County Waste Services announced that household hazardous waste drop-off will move to a new site inside Perdido Landfill on Oct. 6 — residents should follow county guidelines for proper disposal.  Rick's Blog

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The last flight of the TH-57 Sea Ranger landed at the National Naval Aviation Museum flightline on Sept. 19 — marking the end of its 57-year service as the primary training aircraft for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.  Pensacola News Journal
  • An appeals court ruling struck down the state ban on openly carrying firearms and has created legal confusion because existing laws ban concealed guns in places such as jails, bars and police stations—restrictions that may not apply to open carry. Law enforcement and lawmakers are reviewing the issues and will revise the rules during the January legislative session.  Rick's Blog

  • During National Suicide Prevention Month, local churches, schools, workplaces and civic groups are teaming up to offer crisis intervention and counseling services through mobile teams and support units—NWF Health Network coordinates these efforts across the Panhandle to help lower the risk of suicide.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Pensacola restaurants will celebrate National Key Lime Pie Day on Sept. 26—offering a tangy dessert at six stops including Flounder's Chowder House, The Grand Marlin, Oar House, Chrisoula's Cheesecake Shoppe, The Fish House and Atlas Oyster House, and Craft Gourmet Bakery.  Pensacola News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sept. 19, Tate football lost starting quarterback Miles Delarosa to a hamstring injury, and Tanner Clark stepped in to lead two touchdown drives for a 27-7 win over West Florida at Pete Gindl Stadium—drawing a large homecoming crowd. Several local teams, including Milton, Pensacola Catholic, and Booker T Washington, also secured key wins as they set the stage for upcoming district matchups.  Pensacola News Journal
