- ➤ Today, Sacred Heart is launching a new residency program with FSU to boost medical training—PSC is revamping its diesel truck curriculum for driver training and Wisteria Tavern is celebrating 90 years of service. Pensacola News Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pensacola State College will build a 12,900-square-foot facility—next to its truck driving center at 5957 Jeff Ates Road—for its new Diesel and Marine Mechanics Program that will teach diesel repair skills to 30-40 students. College officials said teachers have been hired and the curriculum is set, with construction set to begin soon and the facility expected to open in about 18 months. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Pine Forest High School’s Aubrey Sumner was named Escambia and Santa Rosa County Student of the Week for Sept. 22-26 by Pensacola News Journal after receiving 45.39 percent of the vote—voting for the next round will begin Tuesday, Sept. 30. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ UWF is surveying its faculty, staff and students about opening a free K-3 lab school on campus to serve children and give teaching experience to education students. If surveys show enough interest and funding, the school may open in spring or fall 2026—serving 40 to 50 students. Pensacola News Journal

- ➤ Mayor D.C. Reeves announced that a block of Belmont Street between Devilliers and Rouse will be given honorary signage to remember Reverend John Powell, who died in July—an event to celebrate his legacy is scheduled for November 1 at noon pending council approval. WEAR-TV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola partnered with FSU College of Medicine on Sept 22 to launch an emergency room residency program—designed to increase the number of local emergency physicians available for patient care. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Ascension Sacred Heart and Florida State University launched a three-year emergency medicine residency that began on July 1 with 15 residents training in Pensacola and will add 15 more in July 2027 and July 2028 to train 45 doctors in total to help meet the ER shortage — some residents may remain to serve local patients. Pensacola News Journal
