- ➤ Over the weekend, NAS Pensacola opened its gates to nearly 1,000 people from Guantanamo Bay who fled Hurricane Melissa. Local food trucks brought free and low-cost meals and moved more than 350 pets — vendors will serve until Friday as officials coordinate emergency support. WEAR-TV
- ➤ Bob Patterson, one of 61 living Medal of Honor winners from Pace, earned his medal in 1969 by fighting in Vietnam and stopping eight enemy soldiers. He served in the Army for over 22 years and then worked for 17 years at the VA to help other veterans—his life shows his deep commitment to those who served. WEAR-TV

- ➤ A contractor hit a 6-inch gas line on Gulf Breeze Parkway between Whisper Bay Boulevard and Oriole Beach Road, and although lanes reopened, utilities crews are working to find and repair the leak (they may need to dig up a driveway that is 50 to 75 feet wide). Pensacola News Journal

- ➤ Downtown Pensacola business owners at the City Council meeting on October 23 warned that the $10.3-million Reimagining Palafox project, which will close the street from January to June, could devastate small businesses due to prolonged disruption and loss of key parking spots (22 prime spaces lost). - ➤ Downtown Pensacola will launch a seven-week holiday celebration on November 5 when Santa arrives at 3 p.m. at the Pensacola Museum of History. After helping flip the switch to light over a half-million lights along Palafox Street — the festivities include a Holiday Market every Wednesday until Dec. 17 and the 9th Annual Holiday Haul — families can enjoy festive shopping and local giveaways. - ➤ The University of West Florida Theatre will present Jesus Christ Superstar from November 14th-16th and November 21st-23rd with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays at the Mainstage Theatre (Building 82) on campus. The famous musical uses a mix of opera and rock to retell Jesus' final days and will include atmospheric effects that may not suit all viewers. University of West Florida

- ➤ Daniel Lucas will be named Vice President of Finance and Administration at UWF effective Nov 1, pending Board approval as Betsy Bowers retires, and he will also keep his role as chief financial officer for the UWF Foundation+ he has worked at UWF since 2014 and will oversee key university services including business, auxiliary services, and procurement. - ➤ Escambia County Public Works mowed a Pensacola Beach conservation area far beyond the promised 10-foot strip on Oct. 15, leaving a large patch of dead grass and pooled water that angered local leaseholders. At a Board meeting on Oct. 22 (residents noted mosquito problems and shoreline damage), members said they would revisit the plan before a final decision is made. Pensacola News Journal

- ➤ Triumph Gulf Coast Board of Directors approved term sheets that give UWF $32 million to expand its cybersecurity and computing programs and Pensacola State College $3.25 million for a Workforce Development Training Center. Triumph also approved $12.825 million for Project Kilowatt, which will create 285 high-wage jobs by 2030—boosting the regional economy. Rick's Blog

- ➤ Pensacola bars and restaurants will host Halloween parties on Oct. 31 with events including free entry, live music and costume contests.
