Wilmer Mitchell, who led downtown Pensacola's revival through Seville Quarter, died November 11 at 92 — he helped turn a rundown warehouse into a beloved community hub.
A graveside service will be held at St. John's Cemetery on November 28 — his legacy lives on through his family's work in the area.
The Arc Gateway will host its Wreaths of Joy Gala on December 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Brownsville Community Center, where guests will enjoy handcrafted wreath auctions — silent and live, seasonal bites, an open bar and live entertainment that will raise funds for programs serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The News Journal is asking residents to submit details of their Christmas lights displays for an interactive map of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.
The free online form collects addresses, light counts and brief descriptions to help locals plan a self-guided holiday tour.
Casino Beach Bar and Grille will host the third annual Great Turkey Games on Nov.
15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pensacola Beach, 41 Fort Pickens Road. The event will replace a frozen turkey toss with a contest using turkey-sized medicine balls — a twist designed to support Manna Food Pantries amid growing food insecurity.
The old Vallarta’s building on Lillian Highway in Perdido has sat empty for more than a decade and owners filed plans to reopen it as Pedros Tacos and Tequila Bar, though construction stalled—Escambia County Code Enforcement is addressing issues like trash, debris, and overgrowth as the permitting process continues.
On November 12th, Environmental Code Enforcement Sgt. Sean Hughes inspected the former Vallarta Mexican restaurant on Lillian Highway—viewed as an eyesore by residents who say it should be renovated or torn down.

The UWF Dr. Grier Williams School of Music will host the Strings and Vocal Recital at Old Christ Church in historic downtown Pensacola on November 21 at 7:30 p.m.—students will perform works by Bach, Telemann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Massenet and the event is free to the public.
🏛️ Government
Naval Air Station Pensacola reopens today at 9 a.m. through the West Gate after a funding lapse closed the base for over 40 days.
Visitors can access the National Naval Aviation Museum and Pensacola Lighthouse — public access ends at 3 p.m. and those over 18 must show a REAL ID or passport.
🏥 Health
The 49th annual Stepping Out in Style Fashion Show, presented by the Women’s Board of Baptist Health Care Foundation, raised over $163,000 to support Gulf Breeze Hospital as it celebrated 40 years of service and planned future expansions.
Local sponsors Emerald Coast Hospice and Old South Construction backed the fundraiser.
Covenant Health and Community Services Foundation donated $170,000 to restore the full 5-day hot lunch program for seniors at 16 sites in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties starting Nov.
12 through Dec. 31—federal funding will replace the donation on Jan. 1 to continue the service with existing clients only. The move comes after earlier budget cuts reduced meals to three days a week, and the program had served hundreds of seniors who depend on these hot lunches.
