- ➤ Pensacola’s Saenger Theater is marking 100 years with a grand reopening on Wednesday, April 2 at noon that includes a ribbon-cutting and birthday cake — an event free to all. - ➤ Fifth-grade science teacher Juliana Pearce won a $50K STEM classroom makeover grant from Florida Power and Light at Sherwood Elementary in Pensacola and will use the funds to add VR goggles, a 3D printer, robots and a hydroponics table — her first grant win in four years of teaching — to boost her students’ science learning. - ➤ Pensacola families say Florida's 'Free Kill' law fails them because it limits medical malpractice lawsuits to only spouses and children under 25 — leaving many without a way to seek justice. Legislators will hear House Bill 6017 today in the Senate — a change that could let any family file suit and hold EMS accountable. Pensacola News Journal
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ FHSAA released new volleyball rankings today with Gulf Breeze's beach team ranked 5th in Class 2A and its boys team rated 17th, while Pace holds 23rd in beach volleyball. Playoffs will begin on April 21 for beach volleyball and April 28 for boys volleyball—rankings will be updated weekly as few teams compete in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ The FHSAA released its first softball rankings with Pace High School—defending Class 6A state champion with a 9-0 record—ranked third overall while Jay High School remains undefeated at 8-0 and is ranked 14th. District tournaments will begin on April 28 with top teams advancing to regionals. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ The Waterboyz Spring Surf Classic will be held on March 29 at Pensacola Beach Pier, where surfers from grom up to legend divisions will compete with fees of $20 per division plus $50 for the Bro-Am contest, which may change if weather becomes rough. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Pine Forest High School will host the Smokey’s BBQ Bringing All the Smoke Invitational track meet on April 5th as a qualifier for the regional meet in May—coach Richard Dix said over 20 teams will compete while area coaches and local businesses work together to enhance the new track facility for community use. - ➤ On Monday, FHSAA posted updated lacrosse rankings — Gulf Breeze remained the top boys team at No. 13 and Pensacola Catholic stayed as the leading girls team at No. 21.
