COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Blue Angels flew over Naval Air Station Pensacola yesterday, drawing thousands and forcing the base to close its west gate because museum parking lots reached capacity—after nearly six months of closure for winter training in California.  WEAR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Carlos Antione Holloway was sentenced to life without parole in Florida State Prison after a jury convicted him of first-degree premeditated murder for killing 33-year-old James Johnson on North Loop Road during a botched drug drop on August 23.  Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Saenger Theatre marked its 100th anniversary on April 2 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12 p.m., guided tours from 1 to 5 p.m., and a screening of the silent film (The Ten Commandments). The celebration will continue on Sunday with a street party featuring local performances and extra screenings with a special organ demonstration (by Alex Gartner).  WEAR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Escambia County Public Schools is hosting an in-person Teacher Hiring Event (May 3, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) at Booker T. Washington High School (6000 College Parkway in Pensacola) where interested applicants must have a bachelor's degree, complete the online application, submit official transcripts before the event, and be ready for on-the-spot interviews for full-time teaching positions with a starting salary of $48,300.  WEAR-TV
  • A $500,000 gift from the Merting Family has set up a support fund for a new research office at UWF’s College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities — the John W. Merting Family Office of Research and Intellectual Growth. The office will help students and teachers learn how to apply for big scholarships — a move that may boost the school’s profile.  University of West Florida

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida's DEP announced $25 million in funding for 13 water projects in Northwest Florida to improve water supply and ease the burden on local agencies. The grants include $8.5 million for five projects in Santa Rosa County for upgrades such as a new well and storage tank at Point Baker and nearly $4 million for Gulf Breeze to replace an old water main — work that will benefit residents and emergency services.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Tomorrow the Escambia County Commissioners' Committee of the Whole workshop will review four redevelopment options for Pensacola Bay Center with costs from $22 million to $104 million — Mayor D.C. Reeves said some proposals include basic upgrades like improved food offerings and seating while others add facilities such as meeting rooms and a practice ice rink and the city will fund a larger vision study with community input.  WEAR-TV

  • The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will open their season on Friday, April 4th at 6:05 p.m. at home in a three-game series against the Biloxi Shuckers, with returning catcher Joe Mack and new manager Nelson Prada—promoted from the Jupiter Hammerheads—leading the team that finished a 71-65 season last year.  Pensacola News Journal
