CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Aaron Simmons, a 36-year-old Pensacola man, was arrested on Monday and charged with negligent manslaughter after he struck Michael Tookes's head outside the 24 Hour Store on Gulf Beach Highway on March 22, causing Tookes to die after spending nine days in the hospital. WEAR-TV

- ➤ Officials postponed the street party planned for Sunday to celebrate Saenger Theatre's 100th anniversary due to severe weather — it is now set for May 24 on Palafox Street in front of the historic theatre. Pensacola News Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pensacola is expected to see heavy showers and possible thunderstorms on Sunday with gusty winds, hail and a chance of isolated tornadoes as a strong storm system moves in—bringing cooler, more typical April temperatures next week. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Colorado State University researchers and the Sarasota-based Climate Adaptation Center predict that the hurricane season will bring 17 named storms, with nine turning into hurricanes and four becoming major storms—this estimate is based on warmer waters in the Atlantic. - ➤ New documents show that the Chappie James Memorial Foundation’s records have an $85K gap that the City of Pensacola must inspect—analysis indicates the project may need to scale back the planned $1.2M plaza to address a $760K funding shortfall. Rick's Blog
- ➤ Gov. DeSantis requested $600M to fund the My Safe Florida Home program that will offer free wind inspections and matching grants to more than 45,000 homeowners—another 10,000 may also get help if they complete the remaining steps before the 2025 hurricane season arrives. More than 50,000 people have applied, and 11 related bills were filed early in the legislative session to support the program. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ A proposed Florida Senate bill would require a parent's permission for anyone under 18 to get birth control and treatment for sexually transmitted infections—if passed it will move to the Senate floor then the House—while supporters and critics disagree on its effect. WEAR-TV
- ➤ Pensacola International Airport launched TransformPNS.com to share updates and project details for the Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program—offering a central hub for information on new gates, improved amenities, and community meetings. - ➤ Chairman Mike Kohler said he attended the Defense Communities Summit in Washington, D.C. on April 4th and raised concerns that an eight percent cut could affect military jobs and contracts.
