  • Jimmy Patronis won the special election for Congress with 56.91% of the vote and Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves named retired Rear Admiral Lance Scott as the new port director, while Holt’s Nathan Boyles clinched the GOP nomination for a Florida House seat. AccuWeather forecasted a volatile hurricane season with 13 to 18 named storms—three to five may grow into major hurricanes, and local restaurateur Jacob Calloway opened Lou’s Pizza to bring New York-style pies to Pensacola.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Hundreds of protesters gathered at Graffiti Bridge in Pensacola on April 5 during the Hands Off Rally to oppose what they described as the looting of our country.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Felix's Restaurant closed suddenly last month and its former space was approved for sublease by the Santa Rosa Island Authority to Pensacola Beach Holdings Inc. during the March 26 meeting for a new restaurant and bar called Bounce Beach Pensacola led by BrandIt Hospitality Group from New York; the venue at 400 Quietwater Beach Road Suite 16 is planned to seat about 450 guests.   Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pensacola is set for a busy week from April 7 to April 13 with concerts, outdoor movies, and festivals such as the free Fred Levin Way Fest and the Brantley Gilbert show with tickets starting at $27.50—events that offer options from live music to community celebrations. Other highlights include a triathlon, art and music shows, and dog-friendly gatherings—ensuring there is something for every taste.  Pensacola News Journal
  • The Saenger Theatre postponed its 100th anniversary celebration that was planned for today because of a forecast of bad weather and will hold its street party and screening of the silent movie Phantom of the Opera on May 24—officials said the change is needed to keep the event safe.  WEAR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A contingent from the University of Florida will be in Pensacola mid-April to collect oral histories about local pollution at One Palafox Place—residents can sign up or walk in for interviews lasting from 30 minutes to 45 minutes scheduled for Saturday, April 12. Eight student interns will join UF faculty to document community experiences for preservation in digital archives.  Pensacola News Journal
