  • Pensacola residents can look forward to several community events this week. Gulf Coast Kid’s House will host the Blue Gala on April 30 at Culinary Productions to raise funds for child abuse prevention (guests will enjoy heavy appetizers, beer, wine and live music), the Junior League is holding its Evening in White on April 26 at a secret venue with picnic fare, WSRE PBS is presenting free family fun on April 26 at Pensacola State College, and Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties are offering a RISE internship program beginning June 10 along with coastal plant giveaways on April 25 and 26.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida will host 2025 Gumbo Ya-Ya on May 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Seville Quarter in downtown Pensacola—amateur and professional cooking teams of three will compete for trophies while all proceeds benefit the mentoring program.  WEAR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Escambia County Animal Welfare rescued a dog tied to a light pole on Mobile Highway Wednesday—Tupac, a mixed-breed pup who appears to be in good spirits, will be evaluated by a veterinarian before his adoption is considered.  WEAR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UWF broke its fundraising record at its Day of Giving event by collecting $194,000+ from 1,256 donors in 24 hours, which raised its lifetime total past $1 million.  Rick's Blog

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sam Young, CEO of Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, has been appointed to the Federal Reserve Board’s Community Advisory Council to advise on housing and economic issues plus support low-to-moderate income communities. Habitat Board Chair Dawn Brazwell said his new role will give our region a lasting voice as the Council meets twice a year in Washington.  Pensacola News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • About 2,200 11th graders at West Florida High School got hands-on CPR and AED training on Wednesday—offered by the American Heart Association and Nemours Children's Health—to learn quick actions that can boost survival rates in cardiac emergencies.
