COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 25, a large crowd gathered on Perdido Key for Flora-Bama's annual Mullet Toss where families from Atlanta + Houston took turns throwing fish that flew across the sands while volunteers measured each throw.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Pensacola Plantapalooza will take place on May 3 at Gary's Brewery & Biergarten and is expected to draw thousands as over 50 vendors offer indoor, outdoor, tropical and rare plants along with handmade pots and natural items, while local food trucks serve food.  Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 40th annual Pensacola Crawfish Festival kicked off Friday as locals and visitors gathered to enjoy large crawfish while vendors prepared for a busy weekend. Jeff and Cindy Alleman traveled from Louisiana to try the local flavors and Jack Heaney from Cordova Crawfish said vendors plan to cook 16 to 18 hundred pounds per hour at peak times.  FOX 10
  • Pensacola bars and restaurants will host Cinco de Mayo celebrations on Monday, May 5—with festivities starting on May 2 that include food and drink specials, games, live music, and unique margarita deals. Check local venues for details on events planned across the city.  Pensacola News Journal
  • The City of Pensacola invites residents, artists, and business owners to shape a new Artist in Residence program at a public listening session on May 12 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall (Hagler-Mason Conference Room at 222 W.   • Juniors at West Florida High School in Pensacola learned hands-only CPR and AED use from HCA West Florida Hospital pediatric cardiologist Dr. Alex Arevalo on April 23—students practiced chest compressions and proper AED techniques during their class.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Escambia County lost over $14 million in Triumph Gulf Coast funds for infrastructure at OLF 8 because the county plans to sell the 540-acre property to a private developer — a decision that made it ineligible for public funding. Negotiations with potential buyers like Tri-W Development and Beulah Town Center are continuing — officials hope to secure the right partner soon.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Pensacola is gearing up for the Kentucky Derby with over a dozen parties featuring big hats and bourbon as bars plan themed watch events—today at The Pointe Gulf Breeze from noon to 6 p.m. and on May 3 with a live broadcast of the race at 5:57 p.m. CT at Churchill Downs with contests and drink specials.  Pensacola News Journal
