COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 10, the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive will allow Escambia and Santa Rosa residents to drop off non-perishable food in their mailboxes—helping local food banks and pantries collect needed donations. Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, the drive is in its 33rd year and is the largest one-day food drive in the nation.  Local Pulse

  • The Local—opened by the Vaughn family—is set to open on Pensacola Beach soon to provide beach essentials, specialty grocery items, and a welcoming outdoor space with picnic tables and kid activities. CRIME NEWS

  • A 27-year-old Navarre woman, Rachiel Moore, was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence after she arranged for her ex‐stepfather Jason Curtis to kill Colby Vinson amid a custody fight over his daughter.  WEAR-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Triumph Gulf Coast has approved a $6.7-million grant to the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition to set up the National Center for Collaborative Autonomy that will study new robot technology. The project will cost nearly $29.7-million, must add 12 new jobs in four years, and will be finished by April 30, 2034.  Rick's Blog

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two University of West Florida student teams placed first and second in the International Society for Performance Improvement Case Study Competition held from April 13th to April 17th in Jacksonville— the winning team was made up of Ed.D. students with faculty sponsor Dr. Holley Handley while the second team included master’s students with Dr. Jeff Phillips. They spent 12 weeks working on a real-world problem to craft a strategic, scalable plan to improve technician retention.  University of West Florida

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York Coalition to Save the Steam Ship United States filed a lawsuit in Pensacola federal court on March 2 and appealed to federal officials—asking them to stop Okaloosa County from sinking the historic liner to form an artificial reef. County contractors continue work to prepare the 990-foot ship for towing off Destin about 20 miles away early next year, with over $10 million set aside for modifications and a future museum.  Pensacola News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former UWF football player Virgil Lemons signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent after the NFL Draft ended on April 26. He played two seasons at UWF where he excelled as a punt returner — averaging over 25 yards per return and earning All-American honors — and his performance caught the attention of NFL scouts.  Pensacola News Journal
