ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two EF-1 tornadoes hit Pensacola Beach and Warrington over Mother's Day weekend and caused damage to local businesses and a home. The Pensacola Beach tornado moved ashore around 6:10 a.m. and damaged Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill, UFO's, and Water Pig BBQ while the Warrington tornado damaged a home on Graupera Street and uprooted trees along Rentz Avenue.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola's mayor addressed safety concerns Tuesday after an 80-year-old woman fell on uneven grates at Zaragoza and Jefferson streets downtown, injuring her head. He said the city is working with a utility company to identify responsibility while cones and tape were placed to prevent further accidents.  WEAR-TV
  • The Pensacola Police Department held its annual memorial ceremony during National Police Week to honor 16 fallen officers from over 200 years of service—family members and other agencies joined as a 21-gun salute and roll call of names paid tribute to their legacy.  FOX 10
  • Mayor Reeves said that Pensacola will restart its curbside recycling program the week of July 14 and residents who opt out will see their once-a-week trash bill drop to about $24.99—rates that are scheduled for City Council votes on May 22 and in June. City officials will work with The Recycling Partnership to send mailers and use QR codes to educate residents—ensuring changes are clear before the ordinance is approved.  Pensacola News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first at-home cervical cancer detection device that lets patients collect a sample and send it to a lab for HPV testing. Teal Health said the kit matches the accuracy of doctor-collected tests — a prescription is required and follow-up care is provided for positive results.  WEAR-TV
  • The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola is recruiting seniors 60 and older for the M3AX Trial (a study funded by the National Institute on Aging) to see how exercise can help improve heart health, muscle strength and brain function. Participants must exercise (three days a week for 28 weeks) so researchers can learn which steps boost these benefits.  WUWF

  • National Burger Month is underway in Pensacola as 10 essential local burger spots are featured to help residents celebrate with classic and creative burgers ahead of National Burger Day on May 28. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In Pensacola's Old East Hill—a special neighborhood with old homes—a 133-year-old house at 6th Street and Jackson was saved from demolition by Chandler & Company Construction and Dalrymple Sallis Architecture. They will restore the home as the Lola Lee House to honor its past and build on the local history.  Local Pulse

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mayor D.C. Reeves said two spring regattas impressed many visitors and that Pensacola is in talks to host seven or eight sailing events in 2026 while sealing a $3.525 million FDOT grant to build a high-performance dock complex at the Center for Maritime Excellence—supporting American Magic. City officials are now planning temporary and long-term upgrades to prepare the venues for these events.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Northview High School’s softball team won its first region championship on May 13 by beating Jay 4-1 and earned a ticket to the state Final Four in Longwood on May 20+ Coach Amy Holland said strong pitching and timely hitting helped the team win and now it prepares for its next big challenge.  Pensacola News Journal
