CRIME NEWS

  • Pace Pharmacy owners Stephen Burklow and Monique Burklow and employee David Barron Winkles were arrested May 14 on drug trafficking charges—allegedly dispensing over 48 pounds of oxycodone and 57 pounds of hydrocodone during a multi-year FDLE-led investigation and booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail.  Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Visitors to the National Naval Aviation Museum can view Blue Angels practice flights behind the flight line on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the museum enforces a clear-bag policy and requires REAL ID for visitors 18 and older—offering flight-line concessions and select autograph sessions to highlight Pensacola’s unique Blue Angels experience.  Local Pulse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seventeen leaders from across Northwest Florida completed a seven-month Leadership Northwest Florida program on May 9 in Sandestin where they learned about business growth and regional challenges. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with Escambia County Sea Turtle Patrol discovered the earliest recorded loggerhead turtle nest on Perdido Key on March 11—tying the record set at Pensacola Beach—and county staff will continue monitoring the nest and educating beachgoers on how to protect sea turtles during the 2025 nesting season.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Pensacola will restart curbside recycling this summer after halting the program in 2023 due to high contamination rates; residents may choose to opt into recycling for a fee that raises their bill from about $27 to $32.99 or stick with trash service at about $24.9. The city council will review the plan on May 22 and again in June, and service may begin the week of July 14 if approved.  WEAR-TV
  • Mike Pinzone, owner of Papa’s Pizza and manager of the Pensacola Beach Gulf Fishing Pier, has proposed a one percent tax to help fund a new parking garage and boost public safety—an option that avoids a 1,100 percent increase in MSBU fees; he will present his idea to the Santa Rosa Island Authority at their meeting Wednesday evening.  WEAR-TV

  • Gulf Breeze High School boys volleyball team advanced to the state Final Four after sweeping Nease 3—0 in the Region 1—2A finals on May 13. They will face top-seeded Reagan at 1 p.m. ET on May 16 for a semifinal match at Polk State College in Winter Haven.  Pensacola News Journal
