COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pensacola was chosen for a student-led housing stability project that will bring healthcare resources and job support to unhoused residents. The project received a $10,000 grant and will begin work at the Max-Well Respite Center in two to three weeks in partnership with local agencies — including Re-Entry Alliance of Pensacola.  WUWF

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Restaurant Iron is returning to its roots by offering a combined lunch and dinner menu — a nod to its original lunch-only service — and will serve lunch at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and dinner at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday — meeting customer demand for refined Southern cuisine.  Pensacola News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • The sheriff's office continues investigating the murder of Doug White—a 33-year-old man found with a gunshot wound on Citrus Street Monday morning in West Pensacola.  WEAR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two student-designed artificial reefs will soon be sunk in the Gulf after Coastal Conservation Association donated $50,000 to support Escambia County’s pilot Artificial Reef Education Program—teaching marine science to about 140 students from Booker T. Washington and West Florida high schools.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Escambia County and the Children’s Trust clashed over nearly $500K in tax payments collected for community projects — the county wants the funds used for infrastructure while the Trust argues they should support youth programs — officials will negotiate a final decision on July 10.  WUWF
  • Pensacola International Airport broke its record on Monday with roughly 15,400 passengers and 762 screened in one hour—this high volume came during the Sand in My Boots Festival. Mayor Reeves said the city is updating its Land Development Code with public input and planning a $3M youth center ground lease along with downtown projects such as Palafox Street renovations, a new hotel project and a Bay Center review meeting—steps aimed at boosting local growth.  Rick's Blog
  • Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves is asking City Council to raise spending limits from $2,500 to $10,000 for quicker repairs in parks and public areas after a May 19 workshop highlighted the delays in the current system—City Administrator Tim Kinsella said council members supported the lower limit while debating if the cap should be $50,000 or $75,000, with plans to draft an ordinance for future review.  Pensacola News Journal

  • The Blue Wahoos ended a five-game skid by winning a series against the Trash Pandas—catcher Sam Praytor hit a home run, triple and drove in two runs to tie the team with the Shuckers for first place. They will host a home series against the Birmingham Barons from May 20 through May 24 with most games starting at 6:05 p.m.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Northview rallied from a 5-run deficit to defeat Branford in its first Final Four appearance—now the team will face Trenton today at 12:30 p.m. CT in Longwood for a chance at its first state championship.  Pensacola News Journal
