CRIME NEWS

  • Santa Rosa County sisters Kimberly Lovitt and Amy Williams were sentenced to 36 months — three years — and 18 months in federal prison after they embezzled $844K from a Pensacola business using employer-issued cards, according to federal prosecutors.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Pensacola police are investigating a stabbing at Pensacola Village on May 23 — a woman was injured in the chest and an unknown male suspect fled the scene.  Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • UWF held its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Thursday at the Commons Auditorium to honor fallen service members including MIA and POW & Capt. Chandra Newman delivered a keynote urging attendees to remember the holiday's true meaning as framed photos and memorial displays commemorated their sacrifice.  WUWF

  • Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. said he is open to discussing an interim presidency if the UWF Board of Trustees selects him at a meeting on May 27. The board will vote on the interim leader and hire a search firm after President Martha Saunders departs—officials report Diaz is the top candidate.  Pensacola News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A magnitude 3.1 earthquake was recorded on Friday, May 23rd at about 2:41 p.m. in the Gulf about 70 miles southwest of Pensacola Beach at a depth of 6.2 miles— the first quake near the area since a 2.0 event was recorded in Jay on Sept. 3rd, 2020.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola will hold the next Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup event on May 31 in the East Hill area where residents will leave eligible bulk items curbside by 7 a.m. on cleanup day, and items must not be set out before May 28 & city inspectors will check for code violations.  FOX 10
  • Pensacola Energy customers faced a rate increase decision after City Council approved a $15.9 million settlement over unlawful franchise fees that depleted the utility’s reserve fund — a move confirmed by City Attorney Adam Cobb — which will force higher natural gas rates to rebuild the reserves.  Pensacola News Journal
