COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City of Pensacola today installed a marker at Miraflores Park to honor its past as Havana Square—a 19th century burial ground for African American and Creole residents discovered through research after a boy scout found remains and a map showing 80 possible unmarked graves.  FOX 10
  • Today, the City of Pensacola held a ceremony at Miraflores Park to dedicate a memorial marker honoring 80 unmarked graves discovered by ground-penetrating radar, with two reinterred remains placed in handmade cedar boxes. City leaders noted this event marks the conclusion of a multi-year effort involving local historians and community partners—an initiative to remember long-forgotten residents.  Rick's Blog

  • Andrew Strickland died in June 2023 after filling a prescription for morphine and diazepam from Pace Pharmacy and his family filed a lawsuit alleging that dangerous prescribing practices linked to accused Dr. Elaine Sharp cost him his life.  Pensacola News Journal
  • A 58-year-old Pensacola woman was charged with attempted homicide after she stabbed a man in the back at the Relax Inn on Mobile Highway when a drinking-fueled argument over her job loss escalated – she surrendered to deputies last Friday morning and is now held in jail without bond while the injured man was taken to a hospital.  WEAR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers approved a $115.1 billion budget for next fiscal year after a six week long session of debates between House leaders and Governor DeSantis. The budget includes tax cuts, pay raises, and funding for key projects—including health, education, and roads—and will be sent to Governor DeSantis for his approval.  Rick's Blog
  • A county commissioner pushed for an architectural arch to hide new tolling equipment at Pensacola Beach—while another questioned whether a new gateway was needed. Officials are reviewing the design options as part of the project to welcome visitors to the beach.  Pensacola News Journal

  • The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (record 32 to 31) will finish the first half of the Southern League season with a six-game homestand against the Montgomery Biscuits at Blue Wahoos Stadium from June 17 to June 22 as they aim for a winning record despite missing the division title. Promotions include Fireworks Wednesday, Shark In the Park Night, and Family Sunday, and pitcher Thomas White is set to make his Double-A debut on June 20 (game times from 6:05 p.m. to 4:05 p.m.).  Pensacola News Journal
