COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Preliminary numbers show that 250,000 people attended the Pensacola Beach Air Show from Thursday to Saturday, with an estimated total economic impact of $30 million—organizers will meet later this week to review the event and improve next year's show.  WEAR-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 66-year-old Pensacola woman was critically injured when her Buick sedan crashed into a dumpster—hitting nearby bushes in a parking lot early Monday morning at 1:20 a.m. after she suffered a medical episode, and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment.  WEAR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida schools will start on August 11 for the 2025-26 school year as 56 counties open that day while new rules ban cell phone use during lessons in elementary and middle schools, and a tax holiday on school supplies will run from Aug. 1—Aug. 31.  Pensacola News Journal
  • The University of West Florida will launch its Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering this fall to meet local workforce needs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola had a hot start on Monday and continues today with highs near 95 and 96 and heat indexes reaching 105 and 107, while the National Hurricane Center monitors a tropical disturbance offshore that may bring heavy rain and flash flooding later this week — residents should stay alert for changing conditions.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Residents of Cypress Point reported that thousands of gallons of raw sewage spilled Saturday afternoon along Scenic Highway, running through local neighborhoods and into Escambia Bay. They blamed repeated spills on a broken cast iron force main—despite multi-million-dollar repair plans from the utility authority—and urged immediate fixes to protect public health and local wildlife.  WEAR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed funding in the state budget last week, forcing Santa Rosa County’s Veterans Court to lose a full-time coordinator — leaving it with a shoestring budget to serve 25 veterans. Carmen Reynolds said the program now cannot pay for treatment or testing costs and will struggle to support veterans.  WUWF
  • At a July 10 Escambia County Commission meeting, commissioners clashed over a $500 payment for American Legion Post 33 after Pam Childers’ office applied new community support funding rules—focusing on payment criteria for a Boys State program attended by two high school students.
