  • Four Pensacola nonprofits beat over 56,000 national applicants to secure Starbucks Foundation grants through local Starbucks nominations—4EVR DEZ, Gulf Coast Kid's House, Waterfront Mission and Manna Food Pantry achieved this honor.  Rick's Blog

CRIME NEWS

  • The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in Pensacola on July 16 at 4:37 p.m. near Kincaid Street & Wilson Avenue, where one person was pronounced dead and one suspect was taken into custody.  FOX 10
  • Former Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy Jeremy Cassady, who was shot during a domestic violence call in 2010—an incident that forced his early retirement and led to a kidney transplant—died peacefully at home on July 15 from cancer his family said was linked to his injuries.  Pensacola News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Escambia County School Board voted 5—0 on July 16 to remove over 400 books from the Florida Department of Education removal list, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Flowers for Algernon, and Slaughterhouse Five. The board also discussed updating its challenged books policy during a recent workshop meeting.  WUWF
  • UWF got a new interim president—Manny Diaz Jr.—who started on July 14 and said he will boost academic success, support military students and the local economy, and build a new football stadium. He told faculty, staff and students at the Argonaut Athletic Club that he will work hard to improve student outcomes and strengthen UWF for all.  Pensacola News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking Invest 93L—an area of low pressure crossing the Panhandle—with a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression within 48 hours. It is expected to approach Louisiana’s coast today and may bring heavy rainfall that could trigger flash flooding along parts of the Panhandle and West Coast.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal lawmakers advanced Escambia County's $3 million request Tuesday to improve South Navy Boulevard—this one-mile plan will add new street lights, landscaping, pedestrian paths and a waterfront park to boost NAS Pensacola access. The project now awaits further lobbying by state and federal officials to secure final funding.  WEAR-TV
  • The city is planning to redevelop Palafox Street with little disruption to businesses—evaluating a 5-month full closure versus a block-by-block approach over about a year. Mayor D.C. Reeves said the project will update repaving, sidewalks, landscaping, and drainage and that contractor bids will be received soon with construction planned to start Jan. 2.  WEAR-TV

  • PenAir Credit Union, in partnership with Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, delivered more than 7,500 packaged snacks to the Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center last month—ensuring the snack cabinet remains stocked for patients during treatment.  Pensacola News Journal
