ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, heavy rain led to a crash on Nine Mile Road when a 19-year-old Escambia County driver tried to pass another vehicle near I-10 and lost control—her SUV overturned and struck the other car, and both she and a 20-year-old Niceville driver were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. - ➤ Women on Pensacola streets have been trafficked and exploited due to homelessness and addiction—local law enforcement and service agencies are working to gather evidence and connect victims with recovery support amid legal challenges. Pensacola News Journal

- ➤ In mid-July 2006, friends of the Waterfront Park PAC used cartoon ads in Pensacola to counter false claims about a future park. - ➤ Last Friday, EPA announced it would shut down its Office of Research and Development to cut costs, but a Pensacola Beach lab will not close and will be reorganized instead, according to a lab worker. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Pensacola Energy reached a $16 million settlement — the U.S. House approved funding for Blue Angels hangar repairs. CivicCon will focus on support for Children's Trust with discussions planned for later this week. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ The Escambia Children's Trust will host a CivicCon event on July 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Abbey Building so Pensacola residents can learn how its annual $10 million in tax dollars fund local youth programs; the free event features executive director Lindsey Cannon and 10 organizations that have received part of the $29.3 million in awards + they will discuss progress and challenges. - ➤ On July 17, the House approved $12 million to fix the Blue Angels hangar at NAS Pensacola and $3 million to improve South Navy Boulevard — funds needed to support local military and economic activity. The legislation now moves to the Senate for further review. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Pensacola Energy customers will start getting refund checks in August (for fees charged from 2011 to 2024) after a nearly $16 million settlement was approved on July 15. The utility will eventually raise rates to replace depleted reserves as new bond debt funds capital projects (a move approved by City Council). Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Pensacola residents are upset with the city’s switch to weekly garbage pickup, which started on July 14, because of missed pick-ups and unclear communications, while Councilman Charles Bare called the rollout embarrassing at a July 17 meeting. Mayor D.C. Reeves apologized and said a town hall will be held on July 22 at 6:30 p.m. and the city will boost its recycling sign-up campaign to reach 5,000 households—hoping to improve service.
