ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An infant was flown to hospital Wednesday morning after being bitten by the family dog around 9:45 a.m. on the 6200 block of West Nine Mile Road—Escambia County EMS treated the child until Lifeflight arrived and Animal Welfare officers took the dog for rabies observation.  WEAR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury convicted 52-year-old Sheila Agee of aiding her son in the 2023 Home Depot murder of 18-year-old Brooklyn Sims—text messages showed she coordinated the attack by mapping the store location and urging her son to act.  WEAR-TV
  • Over 1,300 local parents signed a petition asking that Gulf Breeze Elementary assistant principal Kim McChesney be removed after her teen son—accused of possessing and sending child pornography—led the Senior Walk on May 21, and the school board will discuss the case today at 9 a.m. at the Central Office on Canal Street.  Pensacola News Journal

  • NASA said that Jupiter and Venus will shine brightly in the east before sunrise this August, with the planets visible without special equipment and drawing closest on Aug. 11 and 12—spectators may see a crescent moon join after they separate on Aug. 19.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Pensacola’s Foo Foo Festival Committee has launched the 2025 website showing a 12-day schedule of immersive theatre, music, and art set to run from Oct 30—Nov 10. Local organizations such as Pensacola Little Theatre and Pensacola State College are featured and can submit proposals by Oct 3 to become Friends of Foo as the festival’s lineup expands.  Rick's Blog

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most Florida schools will start classes on Monday, Aug 11 while a few counties will begin on Aug 12, 13, or 14, and state law prevents schools from opening before Aug 10—middle and high schools will not have later start times until July 1 next year. Students have just a few days left of summer vacation before the new school year begins.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Two UWF archaeologists turned their research on shipwreck discoveries into a children’s book series that begins with 'Luna the Cat'—a story inspired by real remains from the Emanuel Point shipwrecks near Pensacola. The book, released in July, has gained praise and will be followed by a new installment about a donkey aiding in the Castillo de San Marcos later this year.  University of West Florida

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado State University updated its forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season predicting 16 named storms, eight hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. Forecasters said mixed signals create lower confidence in the prediction—Florida holds an 89% chance for a named storm tracking within 50 miles—and they urge residents to prepare.  Pensacola News Journal
