CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jury selection began on Monday, August 25th, for Dr. Sean Hollonbeck, a Milton dad accused of holding an Uber driver at gunpoint when he pulled the driver from the car after his daughter took an unauthorized ride in 2024 — he now faces charges of false imprisonment and aggravated assault by threat with a deadly weapon. - ➤ Two Pensacola men, 19-year-old Kewhan Landrum and 21-year-old Deyonte' Betties, were sentenced Aug. 25 to 36 and 40 months in federal prison for possessing a machinegun—after attaching conversion devices to firearms while trading them along with narcotics. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Federal prosecutors indicted Justin J. Wright for a fire bombing near Escambia County Clerk Pam Childers’ home in June 2024 and are set to transfer him from Rikers Island to Pensacola for a court appearance on September 10 at 1:30 p.m.—he faces charges including extortion and using fire to commit stalking. - ➤ Dr. Kristen “Brent” Venable of UWF has received a one-year, $100K grant from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate through the University Day program to advance artificial intelligence research and give doctoral students hands-on experience — the project trains robots, drones, and software systems to work together for missions like search and rescue. - ➤ Last Friday, UWF began its national search for its seventh president—forming a 15-member committee with faculty, students, alumni and community leaders to guide the process. The board said it will use stakeholder input and consultation from Funk Associates to recommend candidates and then select the new president following state rules. Local Pulse
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said the city will keep the Summit Boulevard recycling drop-off open despite rising contamination—rotten fish, dead animals and discarded furniture are dumped there, which forces loads to go to landfill. Sanitation Director Darryl Singleton noted that improper dumping has made managing the facility a constant challenge. Pensacola News Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Labor Day falls on Sept. 1 and means local government offices, banks and public schools in Pensacola will be closed while most stores open with some limited hours—USPS will deliver only priority mail. City trash pickup also will change, shifting Monday and Tuesday services to Tuesday and Wednesday, so residents should plan ahead. Pensacola News Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Florida Department of Health data shows 20 Vibrio vulnificus infections have been reported in 2025, including two cases in Escambia County and cases in other counties—five deaths have been recorded statewide. The bacteria, known as flesh-eating, spreads from raw seafood or wounds exposed to warm, brackish water and can cause rapid tissue damage. Pensacola News Journal
