ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AccuWeather revised its forecast on Sept. 11, saying the Atlantic hurricane season could bring 13 to 16 named storms, 6 to 9 hurricanes, and the same numbers for major hurricanes and direct U.S. impacts. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Congressman Adam Putnam recalled his 9/11 experience aboard Air Force One as the plane flew low over Pensacola+ it lacked satellite links so it relied on local TV signals to track events and he interpreted President Bush’s remarks as key to the crisis response.  Rick's Blog
  • Escambia and Santa Rosa deputies and Pensacola Police will no longer enforce Florida’s open carry gun ban after a Wednesday court ruling said the law breaks the Second Amendment — the decision follows a 2022 Pensacola arrest for visibly carrying a gun. Gun owners can now choose to carry openly or conceal their weapons, though schools and government buildings remain off limits.  WEAR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new emergency room residency program has been announced at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola in partnership with the FSU College of Medicine to address Florida's doctor shortage. The program will begin July 1 with 15 residents and will add 15 more each year until reaching 45—strengthening emergency care in the community.  Rick's Blog
  • Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola is now using a gamma knife—called the Esprit Model—to treat patients with trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes severe facial pain and often forces patients to travel from far away for relief, with many reporting fast improvement the next day.  WEAR-TV
