COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Waldo’s Chicken and Beer will replace Tu-Do Vietnamese on Davis Highway as Vision Construction renovates the space for a December opening while Mayor D.C. Reeves and Rep. Alex Andrade remain at odds over the city’s lobbying efforts. Marie Pokrant had trouble getting a COVID-19 vaccine in Mobile, and growing pickleball interest and conceptual plans for a new Maritime Park project — which could add a grocery store and indoor skydiving — reflect shifting local trends.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Two weeks ago, when longtime Shrimp Basket customer Charlie Hicks missed his regular gumbo visits, staff called his home and brought his meal; cook Donell Stallworth then went to his Warrington apartment—where he found Hicks collapsed with broken ribs and dehydration—and called 911. EMS transported him to Baptist Hospital, where he received treatment before moving to a rehab facility.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Bellview East residents who have received a postcard will take part in a free neighborhood cleanup on Oct. 1 to dispose of household items like old furniture, appliances, and hazardous waste—items must be set at the curb by 7 a.m. to be collected in the designated area.  Escambia County
  • Saturday marked day two of the Pensacola Seafood Festival after a court ruling allowed open carry — police and organizers said security was maintained as no openly carried guns were seen, while some people shared mixed views on gun presence.  WEAR-TV
  • Collectors attended the Cards on the Coast Sports Card and TCG Show on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Sanders Beach Corrine Jones Resource Center, where they saw sports cards, collectible trading card games, and enjoyed food trucks — the event offered a variety of items for enthusiasts.  Pensacola News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Some Pace residents questioned the shooting of a well-known black bear on Monday in the Ashley Plantation neighborhood—neighbors said the bear had been seen many times without causing harm while trying to protect emotional support chickens. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the shooting under state bear conservation rules.  WEAR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pensacola hosts a week of diverse events with live music, festivals, and outdoor adventures such as zipline tours in Milton, comedy shows downtown, and pumpkin patches — the schedule runs from today through Oct. 5 to offer options for every interest.  Pensacola News Journal
  • The Pensacola Beach Songwriters Festival will run from Sept. 30 through Oct. 12 and feature 144 songwriters from local venues and national acts—organizer Reneda Cross said the event will include music workshops with local schools and raise funds for nonprofits.  WUWF
  • Pensacola embraces the spooky season with the musical Jekyll & Hyde at the Pensacola Little Theatre, which debuted Sept. 19 and will run until Oct. 5—starring Gavin Parmley and directed by Topher Warren. Local ghost tours like those at St. John's Cemetery and the Museum of Shadows let visitors explore centuries-old legends and haunted history.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • BCC posted the meeting schedule for Sept. 29–Oct. 3, showing sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at venues like CO:LAB, the Escambia County Central Office Complex and the Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building; the meetings will be broadcast live on local TV and online.  Escambia County
  • County commissioners voted 3—1 on September 25 to deny William Coots' request to change his two-acre parcel on the 6100 block of Gulf Breeze Parkway from residential to highway commercial development because he did not show a clear plan—Commissioner Rhett Rowell said he was worried the change could bring issues under the state’s Live Local Act.  Pensacola News Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Starting Saturday, families in the area can enjoy fall fun at Holland Farms and Sweet Season Farms where they offer hayrides—pick pumpkins, ride a train, explore corn mazes, and taste free boiled peanuts at Holland Farms while Sweet Season Farms features extra activities including a corn maze and farm rides.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Week 6 of local high school football saw teams claim wins as Escambia, with a tough defense that forced five turnovers, beat Booker T. Washington 22-3 and Tate edged Navarre 29-26 with a late touchdown run—Mosley, Niceville, Bay and Pensacola Catholic also posted strong results. Upcoming games include Pensacola hosting Booker T.
