- ➤ Pensacola restaurant owner Geo Zelaya is serving free meals to active-duty service members and their families from his Tacos El Fluffy until the government shutdown ends. The community has given over $800 in two days—helping him plan a nonprofit to support troops in the long run. Pensacola News Journal
- ➤ Local churches and nonprofits are invited by Pensacola Eggfest to join a BBQ cook-off—an event that will be held at Hadji Temple on November 16th—with a new ministry division and friendly competition. - ➤ Pace’s Village Inn at 4843 Highway 90 has been given a bold makeover with bright colors and Pensacola landmark art—simple changes that reflect a local style as owner Christopher Titze chose a unique design over a neutral plan. - ➤ New data from the University of Florida shows that rising rents—increasing by 39% since the pandemic—have widened the affordable housing gap in Pensacola, with nearly one million statewide low-income renters struggling as more than 30% spend over one-third of their income on housing. In Escambia County, about one in four renters face heavy housing costs, indicating a long-term affordability challenge for our community. WEAR-TV

- ➤ Escambia County invites local residents to vote daily in the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights competition to help Escambia High School win a $1 million stadium upgrade—voting runs until Oct. 24. The school is one of 25 finalists after receiving a $25,000 award and hopes the community vote will fund new athletic facilities. Escambia County

- ➤ Jeff Weeks discussed his book Right Idea, Right Time which explains how a heated 2006 referendum helped save Pensacola’s downtown waterfront. Community leaders and young professionals mobilized voters—10,297 for and 8,140 against—to transform 27 acres of industrial land into a mixed—use park with a baseball stadium, maritime museum and public green space. - ➤ Congressman Jimmy Patronis warned today that the government shutdown is threatening Florida's flood insurance program during hurricane season—families may see delayed claims processing as 20% of national policies are held in the state. He said he will co-sponsor legislation to extend the program through Nov. 21. WEAR-TV
- ➤ Escambia County Public Safety told residents to use 911 only for true emergencies because many of the almost 95,000 calls received this year did not need an ambulance. Officials said calling non-emergency services like urgent care or pharmacies helps keep EMS available for real emergencies. Escambia County
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Council on Aging of West Florida said its congregate meal and Meals on Wheels programs will continue serving hot and shelf-stable meals to seniors in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties during the shutdown—however, no new clients are being accepted as the agency awaits July funding reimbursements and expects August payments to be processed. - ➤ Pensacola restaurants have updated their menus to offer new fall flavors such as pumpkin risotto, coconut curry Gulf fish stew and duck and wild mushroom gumbo. - ➤ Booker T. Washington football scored 30 unanswered points to beat Pensacola 30-20 in the Mayor's Bowl at Blue Wahoos Stadium, overcoming early mistakes with strong teamwork.
