COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local support for Taco Rock 29 surged after customers responded to claims that America 1st Auto Sales was harassing patrons by using the parking lot, and a state business inspector will investigate the complaint. Chef Odette Ramirez said a painted tribute on a train trestle and delays in opening a food truck have marked the ongoing dispute—issues that have strained the longtime restaurant that has proudly served the community for over 30 years.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Today, Clay Romano, president and CEO of Waterfront Rescue Mission, sits on a bench outside the shelter and live streams his 24-hour sit out for World Homeless Day — he explained this action highlights the daily hardships faced by homeless individuals.  WEAR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • GCE Designs, a new project from Global Connections to Employment, is opening an 8,744–square-foot facility in Pensacola to provide jobs for people with disabilities and deliver branded merchandise nationwide. The venture has partnered with Spectrum Designs from New York and is led by local executive Mike Craney while planning to hire 10–15 team members in its first year.  Rick's Blog
  • VR Adventure Zone is moving closer to opening a new family-friendly arcade at Pier One Marina on Pensacola Beach. The Santa Rosa Island Authority approved plans on Oct. 8—final approval will be sought on Oct. 22 with a soft opening planned for Oct. 25 if renovations stay on track.  Pensacola News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A group of Pensacola Christians is urging the city to cancel a drag show called A Drag Queen Christmas at the Saenger Theatre on Dec. 23 because they say it diverges from past wholesome Christmas events. They argue the city’s contract with the managing company— which allows for event review— should be used to cancel the adult-only show.  WEAR-TV
  • Visit Pensacola will be featured on Wheel of Fortune Monday, October 13 as part of Visit Florida’s Live More Floridays week—this national spotlight will highlight Pensacola’s attractions and offer contestants a chance to win a trip here.  Local Pulse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pensacola Interstate Fair has partnered with Escambia County Public Schools and Reithoffer Shows to launch the Step Right Up Student Awards that will recognize two students per grade from 4 to 12 by awarding them complimentary admission tickets and ride wristbands for the fair, which will run October 16—26. Officials said the program, celebrating the fair’s 90th anniversary, will honor academic achievements and encourage future excellence.  Rick's Blog

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, tropical storm Jerry is moving past the Antilles with little impact, and experts say this year’s hurricane season has been very quiet after nine years of major landfalls. They warn that a Central American Gyre may form between Oct. 17 and 23—though the chance of heavy storms reaching Pensacola remains very low.  Pensacola News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said the city is drafting an ordinance to forgive liens on blighted properties that keep owners from selling or improving their homes. Property owner Nanette Chandler, who faces $15,000 in liens on her historic lodging house on West Cervantes Street, will ask for forgiveness at Thursday night's city council meeting and the ordinance may be approved by November.  WEAR-TV
  • On Thursday, the Santa Rosa County commissioners honored local veteran Sergeant Major Robert Patterson for his heroism in Vietnam after he earned a Medal of Honor in 1969 by singlehandedly destroying enemy bunkers under heavy fire on May 6, and his quiet acceptance with a standing ovation showed years of uncelebrated service + his wife said the recognition means the world.  WEAR-TV

  • Pensacola welcomes a new restaurant as 100 Buffet opens today at 11 a.m. at 19 N. Navy Blvd. The buffet serves all-you-can-eat Asian dishes such as stir-frys, sushi and seafood—priced at $12.99 for lunch and $16.99 for dinner for adults—and is in a soft opening phase until Oct 20.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Milton beat Gulf Breeze 42-0 on Oct. 9 to move its season record to 6-1, a shutout win that marked the Panthers' best win total since 2015.  Pensacola News Journal
