  • Local civil rights leader Rev. H.K.   • BBBS of Northwest Florida said nearly 90 volunteers joined since Feb. 10—yet it still needs more Bigs to serve 237 children waiting in Escambia and Santa Rosa. Prospective mentors must pass background checks and commit for 12 months—new volunteers are needed before the recruitment campaign ends on April 27.  Pensacola News Journal

  • A new Haas Center report shows that Pensacola-area job growth will be strong by 2034, with computer and math jobs set to grow by 16% and fields like arts, design, entertainment, sports and media rising by 12%.   • The Pensacola News Journal working with local high schools named Tate High School's Hannah Story as the Student of the Week for April 14-18 after she won 60.03% of the votes—voting will resume Tuesday, April 22.  Pensacola News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On the eve of the 15th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, EPA regional head Kevin McOmber and other officials visited the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project near NAS Pensacola to address erosion and habitat loss. The restoration effort, funded with RESTORE Act dollars, Department of Defense contributions, state funds and National Fish and Wildlife Federation support, will rebuild White Island and two nearby sites by adding sand, reef breakwaters, and 45 acres of marsh habitat — a step aimed at improving local water quality and supporting coastal wildlife.  Pensacola News Journal
