GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Aug. 14 meeting, Pensacola City Council passed the stormwater tax (4-2 vote) despite strong objections over the fee calculation that raised rates by up to 70% for some property owners, leaving the city just one vote away from a $5.2 million funding shortfall. Council President Jared Moore has scheduled a workshop to update the assessment method before the Sept. 11 meeting.  Pensacola News Journal
  • Pensacola's 'Black Lives Matter' mural—painted in June 2020 and funded by activist Durrell Palmer—may be removed if the city fails to meet state law requirements following a June 30 FDOT memo that warns removal of politically themed street art is needed to avoid losing state funds. Mayor D.C. Reeves said the city will comply with state law even though no direct concerns have been raised by the FDOT district office.  Pensacola News Journal
