  • Pensacola will use a $9.5M state grant to renovate the Fricker Resource Center that has long served the Black community & raised gentrification fears as residents seek oversight of the project. Community leader Haley Morrissette and resident Jermaine Williams stressed that the renovations must benefit longtime neighbors rather than only attract newcomers.  Rick's Blog

  • Today, Pensacola travelers began nonstop flights to Bentonville-Fayetteville on Thursdays and Sundays from $49 one way—Breeze Airways also started nonstop service to Memphis on Mondays and Fridays on September 5, offering fares from $39.  Rick's Blog

CULTURE NEWS

  • Taste of Gulf Breeze will return Oct. 24 from 6-9 p.m. at the Gulf Breeze Community Center—located at 800 Shoreline Drive—where over 50 vendors will offer food and drink samples for $25 per person. VIP tickets cost $75 and include early entry and exclusive perks; guests 21 and older must show a valid photo ID.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Students at Myrtle Grove Elementary will soon move into a new school ($40M) built over nearly two years after the old building was torn down; the 87,000 square foot facility has 70-inch TVs in every classroom and a clinic, and it will open after Christmas break once new furniture arrives (October).  WEAR-TV

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo announced plans to end state vaccine mandates that require the polio shot for school children; doctors disagree on the decision—saying vaccines save lives and the change now awaits action from the Florida Legislature.  Rick's Blog
  • Florida Department of Transportation crews covered the 'Black Lives Matter' mural on A Street in Pensacola on Friday morning—working for about 30 minutes until the street reopened to traffic.  WEAR-TV
  • Pensacola City Council will vote next week on a plan that lets two nonprofits run 28 pallet shelters built for short-term stays and support with health care and jobs — the city will own the cabins while ReEntry Alliance Pensacola and Offentsive Corp prepare the sites and handle utilities.  WUWF

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Health reported a new Vibrio vulnificus case in Escambia County today—bringing the county total to three and including a Pensacola woman who nearly lost her leg after swimming in Santa Rosa Sound on July 27—and the state now has 25 cases of this 'flesh-eating' bacteria that can cause rapid tissue damage if not treated quickly.  Pensacola News Journal

  • Milton High School won a tight 14-13 game over Booker T. Washington on Sept. 4 at the Wildcats’ Sherman L. Robinson Stadium by overcoming three first-half turnovers and a 10-point deficit—Florida Gators commit Kaiden Hall moved to center to lead a game-winning drive while Booker T.
